Visanne

Visanne, to take or not to take that is the question.

In 2012 I was seeing a Endo Specialist at a pain clinic and she suggested I take Visanne to essentially help with the pain and stop my periods. During this time I was on Marvelon which works very well for me but since I was pushing for a surgery I felt that I needed to do what she asked just so that she felt that I was listening. I was told Visanne was new on the market in Canada and that it was similar to Lupron but in pill form and with less side effects. Visanne is a progesterone only pill and I should have known that my body can not just have progesterone.  I found Visanne did 1 thing for me and that was stop my periods.

The side effects that I had were severe sharp pelvic knife like stabbing pains all over the pelvic region. My skin started to break out like crazy all over my face, neck, back, and chest. I started to get really depressed, I had insomnia and by the end of the third pack (3 months) I was completely off my rocker and suicidal.

I am not saying that you should not try it because I am not that daft. I know that everyone responds to medication and treatments differently and I could never say don't take it, I can only express to you what I went through.

Would I take it again? HELL NO!

I think I will stick with the Marvelon for now even though after 8 yrs I am starting to spot every month which I have never done before. I can't picture myself not on Marvelon. I have tried to come off it but what happened to me during my Visanne trial is what happens to me when I come off Marvelon.

I always thought that I had an Estrogen dominance but for some reason I am thinking that it is actually Progesterone.

If you are looking for more information on Visanne here is the Bayer website. http://visanne.com/en/auth/prescribing-essentials/quick-visanne-facts/

What experiences have you had on Visanne?

  1. I thought Visanne would be the solution to my 20 year ride with endometriosis. Sadly I was mistaken. I took Visanne for 48 days and experimented 32 days of heavy bleeding. I am now more than mildly anemic, depressed and worried about what withdrawal will mean for my body.

  2. I knew it would do nothing for me and that I was just being shoved this medication because for some doctors they still believe medicines like this work. I have tried so many and although this wasn't the worst one it surely wasn't one of the best ones either

  3. I took Visanne and had a lot of intestinal problems because of the medication. Probably is because it has lactose, but it was an awful experience. I stopped and now I'm waiting for a new medicine that really can help women with endo. I have severe endo and it has been difficult for me to try new medicines.

  5. I was on Visanne for a year. It was honestly the worst year of my life. After seven months I went back to the gynae for a check up and to tell her I want to go off of Visanne as I still had the same pains, my skin was in a terrible condition and I was acting like an emotional train wreck. She convinced me to stay on it and gave me Roaccutane for my terrible skin problems. My skin didnt get any better, the depression got worse and I lost so much weight. The meds reacted badly to each other and I ended up in hospital. A month ago i went off all the meds. I look healthier, actually feel happy and my skin is getting better on its own. Visanne did not help with my pains at all and I did not benefit from it

  7. hello,
I have endo as well was diagnosed in 2000. I was on marvelon for 10 years until it stopped working for me. I started getting breakthroughs which resulted in me getting a fibroid. I was put on lupron. Loved it! Hated the needles but felt free. Unfortunately, you cannot take it long term. I was put on a birth control can't remember the name that made me crazy. Lost the love of my life and almost lost my job and many friends and my family were also starting to lose patience with me until the drs figured out I was not going crazy but the drugs were impacting my mental and physical health. Had two blood clots. My fibroid got bigger over 6 cm and I started bleeding non stop. Pains and lots of blood. Hospital was waiting for me to faint or blood and iron levels to reach the point that I would need blood transfusions. My family Dr was not happy with the hospitals. I finally researched and found an amazing Dr. To stop the bleeding they said I needed to go on the birth control again. I already went through almost all of them. I asked for her yo put me on something that won't make me crazy and rude. Was told visanne. Other than breaking out on my face, I feel great! I am my happy go lucky self. I just had surgery in January 2015, was told I have to stay on it for good unless I want to have surgery again. It's been 7 months now. I also see a naturopath and together I hope to figure out ways to stop the breakouts and ensure that my hormones are balanced. Endo is high level estrogen. You have to keep in mind that visanne is progesterone and it can if high doses your body turn it into testosterone and then to estrogen. I will be doing tests to see my estrogen levels bad and good ones and then a full hormonal test -not by blood. I hope my story is helpful. Good luck everyone. One thing my Dr said no dairy and no sugar.

I feel what you felt and even worse. I can't sleep at night, I feel so much pain in my chest and breasts, my heart beats faster, pelvic pain and the worst is I feel so depressed, so sad without any reason like I want to suicide. I'm going to stop taking Visanne.Thank you for sharing! :)

    1. Melissa, I'm comforted to read your comment as I am on my third week of Visanne and my heart rate has increased significantly and I have severe chest pains and I am stopping the Visanne today. It is also causing me to double over in cramps where I have to lay on floor at work, it's like someone is inside my lower and upper abdomen ting cigarette buts out on the inside. It's horrible. It hurts so bad I have to take a leave from work. I know there are things that will feel better than this. I mean I felt better on birth control than all this !

  14. This is so helpful. My 13yo daughter has been on Visanne for two months. She was having retrograde menstruation which was causing her some pain and although there was no endo visible at the end of Feb when she had a laparoscopy and appendectomy, the risk is that the internal bleeding would lead to endo, hence Visanne. Two months on, she has not had a period this time but has now been having severe abdominal pains for two weeks. She was very thoroughly scanned and the gynaecologist says she can see no reason for the pain and wants her to see a gastroenterologist. I suggested that it might be the Visanne and she said she wanted us to persist with it. Those who had abdominal pains and came off Visanne.... how long till the pain went away? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bethan you really need to get your daughter to an Endo specialist. It is extremely possible that the surgeon did not see endo because he didn't understand different looks of endo. The younger you are Endo looks different, it could look clear and with an untrained eye may not have seen the endo so your really need to bring your daughter to an endo specialist. The pain will not go away unless she is treated the right way.

  16. I have been on visanne for almost 5 months now to treat my endo symptoms which included sever adhesions. I am having a full hysterectomy in 5 weeks and this was supposed to help me meanwhile. Today I got the ok to stop it and I just want to know when to expect the side effects to go away and for me to feel normal again. The side effects for me were sever mood swings, depression, weight gain, low sex drive and a few breakouts around my chin.

  18. Hello All!
I took Visanne for a year and a half and I stopped because I was having heart pulpations. I was off of it for a year and the endo came back like crazy.
I'm currently back on Visanne yes it does have its side effects however I just decided to get through the first 3 months because I knew that most of the side effects would go away. Now I have learned how important it is to take this medication at the same time every day. I work a messed up shift so on the weekends I wasn't taking it at the same time therefore I was getting heart pulpations.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I want to make it clear just so that anyone reading this is aware. No hormone medication like visanne will stop Endo from growing. The purpose is really to stop your periods therefore stopping the pain. When you are on these meds Endo will still continue to grow if it has not been properly removed from the root. There are a limited amount of specialists that know all the different faces of the disease such as colour, shape, where it can be missed and many surgeons still tell their patients that it will stop the disease from growing if they take meds such as visanne. This is false. You need to have the disease excised (cut out)

  20. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I had a 2 inch endo removed from my right ovary in July, and felt happy, healthy and pain free ever since. In August doc insisted I started taking Visanne "cause it would stop periods and therefore I would feel no more pain". Worst mistake ever! I've been spotting weeking, and after 3 months having the same side effects you described above, I decided to quit Visanne. I hope I'll start feeling better soon! Visanne is not for me!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Angela I think it's different for everyone. I had a lap earlier this year to remove endo and a cyst, it came back within 5 months. Went onto Visanne and within 6 weeks the endo had shrunk to almost nothing. Staying on it for another 3 months then gynae says he thinks it would have gone altogether. I feel ok, headaches eased after the first few weeks but the tiredness is something I can't get used to. I have zero energy!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sorry and forgot to say it is in my right ovary, my uterus was removed about 6 years ago because of fibroids so I haven't had periods since 2009. The pain from endo was terrible and it has completely gone since being on Visanne.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Unknown- Everyone experiences something different on meds. What works for some might not work for another. Visanne helps many people I know, I would say a lot more than Lupron but it is still a bandage. I also know many people that have severe reactions to Progesterone only meds like Visanne.

SA-I am glad you have no pain that is great.

  24. I've only been on it for 4 weeks and it has made me very depressed paranoid and anxious. My heart beat is faster and I feel weak. Also my urine is darker and I feel like my pain had not gotten better. I was told today to stop taking it. I'm worried now cuz I won't be having surgery until next year because of a waiting list. I just feel helpless how are you supposed to have another life if your always in pain?

    3. Yes. I've gained a lot of weight and am having a very hard time losing it.
Despite a mostly fresh vegetable diet, frequent small meals, increase of water and limiting the bad stuff, nothing has been successful. I've lost 50 lbs on my own previously so I know how to do it. The only difference is that with my back now, I struggle with exercise. It's been awful.

  27. Thank you so much for sharing

I've had surgery to remove endo and cyst in July as the pain was so bad I couldn't move. And in August, my doctor insist for me to be on Visanne to stop my period and prevent endo from reoccurring.

In this 5 months, I've had horrible mood swings, uncontrolled depression, weight gain, my hair growth has reduced drastically (everywhere) and breakouts. Sometimes I think I'm going crazy. So much so that I've quit my job and stayed at home and away from many people cause I can't seem to control my anger and sadness.

Coming across experiences like this helps me get through the days. I'm going to see different doctors to get second opinions and hopefully to stop this medication and keep the endo away.

    Thanks everyone.

  28. Hey guys - I want to offer my own personal experience for a more positive outlook on Visanne. I was diagnosed with endometriosis just last year after I was constantly urinating blood with substantially sized blood clots, and also passing blood in my stool. When a colonoscopy and cystoscopy showed nothing - finally multiple ultrasounds indicated what I had.

Let me stress that I did NOT want to take Visanne whatsoever. I felt my doctor pushed the pills on me, and I stubbornly did not take them. When I had my three month checkup with my specialist, I asked some in-depths questions as to why she insisted I try the pills. Finally, I decided to give it a shot.

I started in August. At first, I spotted for 3 months. It was annoying - but I persisted. The spotting finally ended, and every now and then I'll still have a little bit. My pain was crippling in the beginning as well. I was getting horrible spasms that would be debilitating. I debated stopping but again, I let it run its course. It's been 4 months now and I've experienced hardly any side effects other than spotting, and occasional throbbing in my right ovary. I've gained about 10 pounds in water weight and bloating which is VERY annoying but other than that, I've experienced no mood swings or anything like that.

I didn't have a choice BUT to take Visanne - my ovaries have too large of endometriomas on them and since I want children eventually, my doctor is very hesitant to preform surgery.

My advice is to just be patient. Give it more than a few weeks. Medication typically takes 3 months or more for your body to become adjusted. Sometimes, it can be worth it in the end.

So far, my pros outweigh any cons, and I'm quite pleased to not experience a period anymore and to be *relatively* pain free, for now.

  36. Hi Ladies,
Thank you all for your open comments. I have been on Visanne for 10 months now and overall this pill has made my life worth living.
I too experienced pain, infinite bleeding, increased blood pressure, sleeplessness, migraines and depression for the first 3 months of being on the pill but my gynecologist swore it wasn't from the pill..ya right! Luckily I waited it out. Now I experience no pain because I no longer get my period, ever!
My concern is the effect that this must have on my body. I cant find information on whether or not there are longterm studies on stopping a womans menstrual cycle.
All in all I get less acne, near to no pain (occasional minor cramps around that time of month), my moods are constant (although sometimes I can sense that it must be that time, nothing drastic though)

Are most of you experiencing no bleeding at all? Do you have any concerns about that?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Also I did stop vissane once in the last 10 months since I forgot to bring a new packet with me to work. After missing nearly a week of the pill I decided to wait until I got my period to start the next pack, just like you would on birth control. Well, 2 weeks passed and still no period just constant head aches, increased blood pressure...withdrawal. At this point I decided to go back on the pill and see what happens. Nearly 2 weeks after restarting the pill (1month after stopping) I experienced moderate-severe cramping and minor bleeding for 2 days. Then that was it. Back to no periods and no pain.
Needless to say my body says all or nothing!

  42. Thank you for sharing your experience with Visanne! Information is very helpful when we are unsure of what to expect and what to do. I was diagnosed as having endometriosis in the left ovary and adenomyoma in the uterus last April, 2016. Options were oral contraceptives, injectables or hysterectomy. Since am turning 48 this year, my obgyne gave me the option of waiting for my menopause to set in and taking Visanne while waiting. First month on the pill was great! No recognizable side effects just tiredness and some mood swings. Second month, I had a week of spotting then I had moderate to heavy bleeding ever since. I have been bleeding for a month now and my obgyne says just stick it out with Visanne. Things will be better after 3 months is what she said. She gave me Hemarate to make sure my iron level is still ok as well as Caltrate for Calcium. Should I stick it out? Pain is more tolerable now and I take Celecoxib when I couldn't handle the pain. Can I die due to blood loss?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Usually giving any med 3 months is the norm. I would stick it out until then if you can. It helped my pain but gave me new pains and unbearable symptoms. It really is hard to say what to do because everyone is different. If it is tolerable then stick with it. The decision is always yours to make. If you start getting symptoms that you just can't handle talk to your doctor about something different.

When they diagnosed you with Endo did they excise (cut out) the disease?

    1. Thank you for your reply Angela! As for your question, my ob wanted me to undergo hysterectomy to remove the adenomyoma in the uterus and the endo in the left ovary but I opted to hope that menopause would come soon since am 48 already. The ob gave me Visanne which she said is safe to take for a maximum of 3 years. Am praying for menopause to come very soon so I could stop taking any meds. Am praying for all of you too. Endo is both painful and depressing to have. I miss my lively and happy self. Hugs to everyone out there who are suffering too.

    2. Im on my 7th month now with Visanne and so far i am honestly happy with the result. Earlier this month i had my follow up ultrasound to check if my endometriotic cyst has become smaller, and than God it did!

Im glad i saw this site coz i thought im just imagining my changes of moods since i started taking this. But so far everything is going very well. I visited my OB recently to tell him that im having a breakthrough bleeding. He told me it was normal coz some women are also having for about more than a month of bleeding, then it will eventually stop. So i was relieved. But right now, as in this very moment, i just had my 3rd change of pad for the last 3-4 hrs this night. Honestly im quite thankful coz even im having a bleeding, i dont feel much pain. And i also consider it as my body cleansing itself.(that’s how i found this site).

My OB told me that i will be taking this medicine for about 9-12 month. I am also taking Dostinex for my Prolactin medication (abnormal hormonal count) which causing my bloatedness and very painful period every single time. We gradually reduce the medication whenever my doctor was pleased with the result. And thank God it’s down to half pill per month now.

      #We can get through this!
#in all circumstances, give thanks. 🙏🏻
      God bless everyone!

I was diagnosed with Endo last March 2015,had three cyst removed from left and right ovaries. My OB prescribe me to try depo shot to avoid having period. After a month I had really bad spotting and fatigue, I went to my OB again and she just said much better if I take contraceptive pills to balance my cycle. My period starting to be painful again and felt really afraid to my endo symptoms. I decided to try second opinion, I went to a new OB and found out after a test that I have new Cyst growing again in my left ovary.
She told me to take Vissanne for 4months,to dissolve my cyst. Im on my 3rdmonths now. I dont have pain just a bit of cramp, mild spotting and hairloss.Headaches once awhile and I missed my period for two months. So far no severe pain and Im happy about it.I will have my next check up after 4rthmonth if no more cyst I will try my best to get pregnant.Godbless us all.

  53. Hi Sarie,

I was on Visanne for 6 months. After I've stopped, it was about 1 month or so before my first period came. However, I am now having terrible mood swings and depression (compared to pre-Visanne days) and I am not sure if it is a side-effect of stopping the medication or just work stress.

  55. Hi Everyone,
I took Visanne for 4 months but my monthly period did not stop and the adenomyosis and endometriosis worsened so I had to undergo total hysterectomy together with the ovaries! Am still recovering from the surgery and adjusting to instant menopause but no more abdominal pains and bleeding! I hope you all find the right option to say goodbye to your pain.

  58. Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2011 and since then have tried multiple ways to control it. I had a lap in 2013 to remove some of the endo. I then had Mirena IUD inserted in 2013 as well to help stop my periods as the lap procedure was not enough. I started taking visanne in 2014 due to constant pain and spotting not controlled by the iud. I stopped taking visanne about 2.5 months ago as i want to wean myself off slowly to prepare my body for pregnancy. As a result, i have had spotting most days with clots, at times moderate to severe cramping, mood swings, breast tenderness and nausea. Has anyone stoppee before and experienced similar symptoms? And if so how long did the symptoms last? Im scared that i am doing my body more harm than good at this time.

  60. Hi. I'm in my early 20s. I have very high estrogen level and had to go for surgery coz the endometriosis spots spread all around my uterus and my periods caused me to have a huge cyst on my right ovary. So the doctors advised me to take Visanne. During the first few months, my body reacted poorly to Visanne. But as time went by I can't tell you how grateful I am to Visanne. My dysmennorea and endometriosis pain has disappeared. Yes there are a few side effects during the first few months coz your body is getting used to the change. I used to suffer from acne but after Visanne my acne totally stopped. I'm using Visanne for over a year now and will not stop using it until I plan to get pregnant which will be years from now. Hope this helped :)

    1. Hi. I've been taking Visanne for over a year now daily. Once, I missed taking my pills for 2 days and almost immediately my period started. So don't worry. It should start back in a day or 2 or maybe even 3. But definitely won't take very long. :)

  63. Hi All, I am on Visanne for almost a year now. I have endo in my bowel and to avoid any major surgery i am on visanne. I have mild side effects like bloating and yes i have gained weight but I am pain free.
From past few months i have noticed that my skin is very itchy and my scalp is very dry that has caused danddruff and some hair loss. But i dont think i will stop taking Visanne. It has helped me a lot to lead a pain free life! Hope this helps.

  64. Hello everyone, I started taking Visanne since February after my second surgery of endo.
I'm so glad to find that I'm not the only one experiencing terrible time because of Visanne.
The first month was good without any side effects. Well, I was really afraid to start Visanne because I knew that it has a lot of side effects. And then after a month, i didn't have my period and since that my period stopped. But after a month, I had a light bleeding and it became a heavy clot. I had that heavy clot for few days and it was so scary and depressing.
I didn't have any spot or bleeding for few days after a month but then it started again and it's going on and on.
Except the bleeding, I am suffering from stomach pain like poking and swirling feeling, mood swing(sometimes I feel so sad and depressed that I really don't know what to do), tiredness(feel tired really easily).
Except that I don't need to deal with period, Visanne is giving me a lot of terrible feeling.
Hope Visanne works out well and I don't need to do any surgery about endo.
I am expecting to have a baby after Visanne.
I hope everyone who's suffering from endo and Visanne find a small peace through this website and get healthy!

  65. Hi all,
I've read almost all your comments here, and my story seems somewhat similar.
I have discovered I had endo in 2004 and been battling with ever since. I had surgery after few days of discovery since the cysts on my ovaries were huge and the pain unbearable. After surgery I was on shots that stopped my period for 6 months but was impossible to continue after 6 months since it was dangerous. After the shots I was put on Yasmin birth control pills and period was regular again, however Yasmin ruined me with the mood swings, inability to move and being nauseas 24/7. It didn't fix anything. In 2017, after several failing attempts to conceive, I had to get a laparoscopy to remove the recurred endos. After another intravenous shot to stop my period, I went for my IVF. It was a success, but endo didn't stop growing. After meeting a new gyno.,we decided on suction (aspiration method) to empty the cysts of the endo every year to avoid some discomfort and side effects. So I went to aspiration surgery every year from 2008 till 2015 till that stopped working again. I had hamoraged for 3 moths straight with no serious pain, but I kept feeling weaker by the day. That's when my Gyno. decided to put me on Marvellon which brought back all Yasmin's side effect with a notch this time of throwing up and fainting since my low pressure persisted and dehydration due to throwing up was a fact to face. I stopped marvellon after 3 days only and went to meet my gyno again. He advised either surgery again (for the 3rd time) or Visanne. Visanne saved me from surgery and I'm on it for almost 2 years now. My cysts are getting smaller now although in millimeters, but all signs of endo are gone. I tried to stop it once and heavy serious bleeding left me in bed for few days. Some mild side effects are inevitable but do we have a choice? I have constiption no matter what I do, my gyno didn't mention I shouldn't have any sugar or diary along with Visanne and I just controlled my salt intake to create some balance;but I now I have fat deposits in places I never imagined(and I'm not sure any diet is working or even exercising) and my breast grew few sizes and feel so sore all the time. I have to stop Visanne on August 2017, and the gyno advised me to either try for another IVF or another laptascopy since there are no proven or recorded trials of Visanne after 15 months and it has been almost 24 months for me.
Wish me luck ... and I wish you luck with the battle and the constant pain with the hope of finding a serious cure soon and we stop being the guinea pigs that we are.

  67. Hi Everyone
It is so helpful to find spaces like this and now that I am not the only one suffering from this awful disease.
I would like to tell you about my experience. First of all Im from Honduras so hello.
I had been suffering from pelvic pain since my first period when I was 15, this pain just got worst and worst every year, went to the gyno since 15 years old and all the different doctors suspected I was faking the pain since nothing ever showed up in the ultrasounds. Move forward 16 years, yes 16, at this point the pain was excruciating I had pain 1 week before my period, the 8 days my period lasted and 1 week after my period, so basically I had pain for at least 18 days straight, the week of my period the pain was so awful that I couldn’t walk for 2 days, no pill would help, ended up taking opioids which would get rid of the pain only for one hour and then they’d come back. Those where the worst days of my life, and even then drs said I had nothing and that I was faking so I dint have to go to work… unbelievable.
One day in January 2014 at age (31) I had pain in one side of my buddy and they suspected kidney stone so I had an MRI, from there hell broke loose, I was diagnosed with Cancer by 4 different doctors, can you imagine CANCER, cause they saw a huge amount of tumors un my uterus. I found a gynecologic oncologist which said “immediate operation”, 3 days after diagnosis I had a laparotomy, that resulted in the extraction of a softball size tumor, my left ovary and the happy news that it was not cancer but that it was a very severe endometriosis that had my uterus fused with mu intestines the fallopian tubes and ovaries, and endometric adhesions in my anus. So yes it’s not cancer but my endo is really advanced.
After the surgery, I was put on some injections for 6 months to induce some sort of menopause (the most awful hot flashes ever), and since august 2014 (almost 3 years now) I have been on Visanne. I have had NO pain in all this time, for the first time in my life since I was 15 years old I have a pain free life. Are there side effects… yes awful mood, sometimes hate everyone around me jajajaja, hot flashes but not as bad as with the injections, weight gain (35lbs ) pounds that have been impossible to shed off no matter what I do, just recently pain in my breasts, a little hair loss but nothing extreme, and ZERO, ZERO, ZERO sex drive(no partner so I don’t care that much). In general I’ll take the side effects 10x before returning to my pain. Visanne has changed my life I’m never stopping the pills, and if I have to, it will be only to get a FULL hysterectomy, so no kids for me, :(

    1. Honestly, all these doctors that were so oblivious to endometriosis have got us in horrible states of pain, surgeries, ovary removals or worse in some cases.. I wish we could somehow make their names known because they shouldn't have been practicing.

      Delete
    2. oh my God!! I am so sorry to read about your experience.. seriously these doctors who didn't listen to your pain should be sued! you have suffered unnecessarily for something that could have been corrected earlier! You know at least you have pain and know that something is wrong. in my case, I did not have any pain at all and only knew I had endometriosis because i had IBS for a few months.. and I ended up having cysts on both of my ovaries, one of which was an endo cyst. Now every 6 months, I will wonder whether it is returning because I don't have any sign if it is coming back.. I have to rely on ultrasounds to know. I had a recurrent of it just last year at 5cms (1 and half years after my first laparotomy) but the doctors told me to wait it out and I did. after 6 months I went for another check and it disappeared. So its really a crazy disease that seems to have a very different experience for every woman.

  68. Visanne for me has been a life changer. I had some breaking out the first month and light cramps (no pain meds needed) for another 3-4 months but after that NOTHING. I've been on this medication for a year now and I can't tell you how much my life has changed. No more missing work, no more cramps, no moodiness no pain meds, no irregular periods (I just don't get them anymore), no nothing. Feels amazing!

  69. After a 9 month wait I finally saw a specialist and endo was confirmed. She insisted I try 3 months of visanne before discussing surgery. I have been on it for two weeks and am completely bed ridden with cramps and bleeding worse than ever! I literally have not left the house and am taking Percocet ever three hours. I am starting school in September and am terrified I won't be able to. I cant imagine sticking this out for 3 months.

  70. I had a 10cm cyst that burst on my left ovary this past sunday night. I went to my gynae who prescribed visanne to me for my endometriosis. Needless to say i was on the medicine for 3 days and ended up getting rushed to the hospital from severe pelvic pain, swelling vomiting and
Tempretaure spikes . At first we thought it was septasemia but they ran all the tests and could find nothing. Did ct scans, blood tests and ultrasounds nothing came up. They then said it was my intestines causing trouble and i was constipated but i was not at all and kept telling them the pain is coming from my pelvis region and i could go to the bathroom easily so i knew it wasnt. Needless to say had i had not found this website i would not have thought itbwaa the visanne. Ive stopped, it for 1 day already and my tenperature is coming down and the bloating is supsiding. Im still incredibly tender but atleast i know i wasnt going crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  71. And here I was thinking I was alone in my constant wondering of what exactly does Visanne do for me. I've been on it for 2 months now. My prescription will probably be renewed on my next appointment with the gynae which is next month. I've had spotting twice. It's slightly more today because it was just a strip of red previously and that was it. But it came out as a light spotting today and I'm monitoring it in case I will finally have my period. I've experienced palpitations, my breasts were sore and my husband commented that they'd grown in size, I sometimes get stabbing pain on my pelvic region, and recently I feel tired easily. But the most significant problem will have to be the skin break-out. I've never had acne before but now I do, thanks to Visanne. It's not healing at all and I'm just wondering if there will be any chance that it will.

  76. My gyno has been pushing for me to use Visanne for years. After a Lap, being diagnosed with Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, my gyno didn't "see" any Endo, but believes it is possible. My pain escalated after the surgery but they can't figure out why. Gyno pushed for me to try Visanne, and I did out of pure desperation. My pain is primarily in the left ovarian area, but according to my gyno, my ovary is perfectly normal and healthy. She also claims that the PCS wouldn't cause this level of pain and if it did, there's no curing it (but I have learned that ALL gynos seem to dismiss PCS, and that it is actually treatable by vascular surgeons).
The Visanne turned my desperate state of depression into pure unbridled frustration and aggravation. I was so ridiculously irritable all the time and upset at even the smallest things. I happened to get hit with numerous side effects; UTI (which became a kidney infection because my gyno brushed the symptoms and urinary bleeding off), yeast infection, thrush, lethargy, fatigue, insomnia, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fevers, etc.
The pain began to lessen as the kidney infection was treated, so (with my gyno agreeing) I stopped Visanne because it was making life worse, and I only felt better when the infection started being treated, so we would see if it stopped the pain.
The first two days off Visanne were fine...by the third day, my uterus was cramping to unbearable levels. Worse than my heavy periods before getting an IUD (my body also went into false labour during periods, contractions and all). I don't have any bleeding, but it has been almost two weeks of intolerable uterine cramping and stabbing pains.
I read that it was normal to experience cramps for the first little while, but does anyone know how long before it stops? I really don't want to go back on Visanne, but I don't know how much longer I can stay bedridden in so much pain...
I would contact my Gyno but she never calls back and it is virtually impossible to book appointments with her that are sooner than a month....
For those who stopped Visanne, is this normal? I had only taken it for a little over three weeks...this amount of pain doesn't seem right...what do I do?

    1. I forgot to mention, I had two cysts removed from fallopian tubes, and following surgery, a large cyst on my ovary collapsed and ruptured which doctors initially assumed was the cause for the pain. The cyst took a couple weeks to reabsorb, but the pain remained, which led to the Visanne trial.
I've had a very sensitive stomach as well as bloating.
Anytime my abdomen swells, I look pregnant and the pain becames much more intense during bloating (whether I ate a full meal, or my bladder is full, or my IBS is acting up, etc.).
Walking for more than an hour also causes bloating and flares in pain, sitting doesn't help, and now laying flat with a heating pad doesn't help nearly as much anymore.
I cannot take drugs for the pain, because so far no medication has worked to stop the pain.
I am at a loss for what to do now.

  77. I thand you all so much for sharing your experience. Right now I have the visanne in my bag and I'm so scared to start taking it because I have so much issues with contraceptive. My Endometriosis is 1.2cm and that's what is seen inside the cyst itself as well as I have two cyst in my right ovary measuring 3.5cm and 5.5cm in size that's almost the size of my ovary. I once took Lupride injection for six months and I didn't have any period for 10 months so listening to these comments make me think and stress so hard and I really wonder if I really shouldn't start taking the Visanne, what do you think I should do? I had an appointment with my gynecologist yesterday however when I went I was told that he won't be available so I will have to wait until Friday again to see him

    1. Hi I have been taking Visanne for one month and the first week or so I had insomnia. I take my pill at 9pm every night because I am home usually at that time and will not forget. After the first 2 weeks I sleep like a baby. Mood is the same on or off any hormone therapy. I haven't gotten my period. My hair is very long but fine and I've noticed I'm losing more hair which will be a problem if this continues as I love my hair. No skin issues but my skin looks more dull. Not sure if it's the weather change. Libido has been up and down and my breasts have grown a size. Weight gain is minimal, first month I felt like eating less but the past week I've been on some binge. No period but wondering if I am experiencing the same pms symptoms. More moody this week too but again nothing too crazy. I can't tell you what to do but I can say I am pain free. I did not experience the pain that most women with Endo experience prior to Visanne. I did have attacks that lasted hours from my endometriomas on my ovaries. They are large and I do not want to remove them as I am afraid to lose one or both of my ovaries. I do not want surgery. My gynecologist suggested Visanne in hopes to shrink my cysts or which will minimize my pain. He has me on a 3 month trial. I can't tell you what will happen but after reading tons of stories I can only suggest that if you do try it, give it time. My pain is gone and that at the moment is all that matters as the pain left me miserable. Good luck!

My only concern with it is i fear is that it might be messing around with my epileptic meds, and its also making me GAIN weight that i dont need since i am overly over weight already. Although it is helping my endometriosis, I have no periods, it stopped all together, i just get a little concern for my weight.

  79. I was just diagnosed as having endometriosis like 3 weeks ago..i have been having severe pain on my right side and pain in my right pelvic region down to my crotch area. first week i felt like i had UTI( actually i have been having these UTI like symptoms for almost 4 months..it always comes at almost the same date each month like clockwork..i had constipation a few days prior to my period, and get LBM during the 1st and 2nd day..the severity of which depends on how many months i have missed my period..

Last last week was the most painful, so i took a urine test..but it came out NEGATIVE for UTI though it had said that I had blood in it..i then went to my OB and told her my symptoms. I had a papsmear and TVS procedure that time. My papsmear came out negative for anything though my OB told me during the procedure that I had discharge. My TVS didn't show any lesions..in fact she said my uterus was healthy..she asked me about what i was feeling and diagnosed it as endometriosis based on my symptoms..She gave me prescriptions for Dienogest Visanne..she told me to expect spotting after taking it for 28days..but it's the 18th day of my taking Visanne and I still have that dull ache in my left side..3 days ago, i felt faint and my left pelvic was acting up again. When i went to the toilet I realized i was having my menstruation. It wasn't just spotting..lumps of blood were coming out..The bleeding isn't that heavy but it can't be considered spotting either. I am waiting for it to stop..i don't know if it's even normal to have this kind of bleeding when it was explained to me that this pill would stop me from menstruating...hope anyone could help me..

  80. It worked the first year or so I was on it. No pain, no periods, it was amazing. I had tried Lupron prior to it and now THAT was terrible. I was so miserable. But eventually, Visanne stopped working. My gyne refuses to believe the pain I have is from the endo. I'm in the process of getting a second opinion. I have spotting almost every day. Was sent for an ultrasound (pelvic and TV) which showed nothing, as expected. I have gained like 50lbs in 2 years, some of it being due to the Lyrica I took for a couple of months for fibromyalgia. Lost like 10lba after going off it. My gyne wants to wait until my late thirties for a hysterectomy - I am 34. I know it might not fix everything, but I'm so fed up and my uterus and ovaries will have to get evicted. I hate bleeding, I feel dysphoric when I do, along with the cramps. Current gyne only sees me once a year and is trying to find an excuse other than endo for the pain I'm having, and I'm sure that's BS.

    1. im sorry to hear about your experience.. but do you have children already? because having a hyst in late 30s is still too early especially if you have no children yet to and want to have some. you have to find another doctor who truly cares about this condition.. so far I have been lucky with my doctors as I am able to see them at least once in 6 months and that is also needed for me since I need to get a prescription from the doctor to get my birth control pills (I am using Maxim) which seems to be a brand only available in Germany. I am curious to know, what was the sign for you when Visanne stopped working?

  81. So, I am 47 and have stage 4 endometriosis, a fused pelvis, enlarged uterus 184ML 12.44 cm attached to abdominal wall and a 194 MM 7CM by 6.5 cm right ovarian cyst and slightly enlarged left ovary. I have dealt with endo, adenomyosis, and leomia (Sp) for a long time. I refused lupron due to horror stories and since you cant just stop if a medicine was injected. I was really doubtful about the Visanne because I feel like doctors just push these things and we are truly guinea pigs. But I also don't want the massive surgery that it would take to try to fix things especially since there is no guarantee that scarring would be worse or come back. There is no guarantee that once they remove all the adhesions that everything in my abdomen wouldn't just collapse out the bottom. So, I started the Visanne.
I can honestly say that immediately I felt some relief. It seems I stopped my periods immediately since my first cycle is skipped. I have only been on for a few weeks, so I don't know if my experience will continue to be positive, but so far so good. I am quite surprised. Have also not felt glum or had skin issues. Again, fingers crossed. I guess it goes to show how different we each are and what works for 1 might not for another and vice versa.

  83. Hi everyone,
Wow, so many stories about Visanne.
My doc prescribed it in preparation for a laparoscopy, and to be taken for 1 month after the surgery (she says it reduces the bleeding and helps doc to spot better where endos are located, to help removal (burning)).
I took it for 1 1/2 month, but surgery was cancelled, so nurses said to continue till next month.
BUT I COULD NOT CONTINUE. I lost my cool at work, yelled at a boss (who was being unfair, but nonetheles... I overreacted), fought with my super sweet and understanding husband, felt moody and incredibly angry (intense rage). I got paranoid, super irritated, and mad at myself for feeling so crazy, to the point of feeling suicidal and worthless. I stopped the medicine immediately - it is obviously not agreeing with my body.
    Side effects:
Bleeding and spotting for 4 weeks
    No periods (always been regular)
    Weight loss
Loss of sexual drive (plus pain during intercourse - never a problem before)
    Increased blood pressure
    Anger, rage, moodiness, sadness
    Some insomnia
    Hot flashes (first two weeks)

    Hope this helps others.

My doctor prescribed visanne for 3 months but I ended up taking it for a month due to the extreme moodiness and rage as well as my breasts were constantly swollen and hurting. I want to know how long did it take for your period to regulate and return. I've been off of it for a month and a week and still no period?

  84. I had a tubal July 2020 and have not felt the same since. I have horrible PMS for the entire week prior to my period, my cramping and bleeding is off the chart, migraines three times a week, hot flashes are starting. My doctor suggested getting an IUD...That was even worse DON'T DO IT!!! I have gained so much weight I weigh more than I was when I was pregnant last year. So I have been in search of weight loss and I did crossfit for 90 days with no results. Then a friend of mine introduced me to Dr Itua herbal center product and I was resistant at first but thought what the hell I will try it for 30 days. In 3 weeks time I have lost 8 pounds but the best part is some of my symptoms have gone away or are far less noticeable. I started my period three days ago and on day two I realized NO CRAMPING at all!!! Then I realized that the pms was not nearly as bad as it had been...There was no dull achy pain, no lower back pain, no deep depression, less tired.
